For Immediate Release:  White Night II in NYC

Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre and Notes in Motion Outreach Dance Theatre are proud to present, White Night II – a Movable Performance Soiree on Saturday, February 25, 2012. Tickets will grant entry in 15-minute intervals between 7pm and 9:15pm. Upon admission, guests will be guided from room to room through the three leveled space, discovering live music, ongoing dance performance previewing Amanda Selwyn’s developing new work, video installation, a silent auction, gambling, a slice of Notes in Motion arts-in-education programs, flowing cocktails, costume exhibits, and give-aways. At the conclusion of the tour, guests can steer their way through the nine spaces at Space on White, returning to explore further and create their own experience for the eyes, ears, palate, and spirit. All proceeds support Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre’s Twelfth Annual Performance Season World Premiere Detour at New York Live Arts in June 2012 and Notes in Motion Outreach Dance Theatre’s arts-in-education programs in NYC Public Schools.

Detour will run from June 21-23, 2012 at New York Live Arts, 219 W. 19th Street, NYC.  The work, an evening-length dance theatre performance, shifts perspective and perception. The choreography challenges the ways in which the mind acts to narrow our scope – creating unnecessary pain and false judgment. A moment on stage that looks one way will transform thereby challenging the way we originally experienced that image or moment. By veering off course and getting out of our own way, we are able to experience the present more fully. Through physical dynamics, luscious movement, and theatrical elements, Detour will continually shift the experience of perception. The piece will subvert expectations; just as momentum builds onstage, the energy will shrink. Likewise, just as something appears small, it will grow to feel massive, vast, and timeless. Turning movement inside out, Detour will play with timing and musicality, stillness and repetition, spatial design and direction. It is in these moments of detour, when the possibilities for change reveal themselves.

Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre productions engage audiences in original and dynamic dance theatre that raises questions, challenges social norms and values, and magnifies humanity through dance. Productions pivot around core themes and through interplay between athletic and pedestrian motion, activate emotional expression, character, and narrative in a rich and abstract collage. Amanda Selwyn’s collaborative choreographic process nurtures our own network of artists while actively engaging the community at large.
