Every year the small Cornish town of St. Just where I live holds a summer festival. In this remote corner of the UK world cultures are celebrated. Every year the event inspires a painting that I sell to benefit the following year’s festival. In “Viva Lafrowda! – Cultures Come Together, can there be unity in diversity?” the 2010 event led to a piece with huge contrasts; the defiant and carefree Mexican approach to death confronts Cornish cottages. For me the image prompted the question I’ve posed in the title. Perhaps this is our biggest global challenge?
