The artworld is setting up for what should be an exciting season this March.  At the forefront is Volta, whose incredibly unique approach captures a wide range of artists.  Amanda Coulson, the art critic and fair director, is a dyanamic personality who is passionate about her project.  To see more, check out her video interview here: http://voltashow.com/Home.5726.0.html

VOLTA NY is an invitational showcase of exclusively solo artist projects from notable and emerging international talent. This follows VOLTA’s original mandate for a tightly-focused program that fosters a dynamic gaze into the current art climate and salient contemporary positions — regardless of the artist or gallery’s age.

“A rigorously curated selection of exceptional artists from 79 galleries, representing 24 countries and 44 cities, form VOLTA NY’s fifth consecutive fair.”

For Immediate Release: VOLTA NY 2012:  5 Years of Exclusive Solo Projects

VOLTA NY is an invitational showcase of exclusively solo artist projects from notable and emerging international talent. This follows VOLTA’s original mandate for a tightly-focused program that fosters a dynamic gaze into the current art climate and salient contemporary positions — regardless of the artist or gallery’s age.

A rigorously curated selection of exceptional artists from 80 galleries, representing 25 countries and 45 cities, form VOLTA NY’s fifth consecutive fair. It complements the exciting program of art presented by its sister fair, The Armory Show, with shared VIP access and the Open Forum Talks Program. VOLTA NY runs from March 8 through 11, 2012.

VOLTA NY was conceived by art critic and fair director Amanda Coulson. This is the American incarnation of VOLTA, based in Basel, Switzerland and founded in 2005 by dealers Kavi Gupta (Chicago), Ulrich Voges (Frankfurt) and Friedrich Loock (Berlin). The eighth edition in Basel, VOLTA8, will coincide with Basel Art Week in June 2012.

Select highlights this year include two members of former Yugoslavia’s New Art Practice movement, Sanja Iveković (subject of her debut U.S. museum exhibition Sweet Violence at the Museum of Modern Art, and showing with Valencia’s espaivisor – galería visor) and Mladen Stilinović (represented by Ljubljana, Slovenia’s P74 Gallery). Boston’s Steven Zevitas Gallery features painter Andrew Masullo, showing in the 2012 Whitney Biennial; and London’s EB&Flow exhibits photographer Alinka Echeverría, who participated in the 52nd Venice Biennale.

VOLTA NY echoes the spotlight on Nordic Countries this year with six galleries from northern Europe, including Liisa Lounila (represented by Helsinki’s Gallery Kalhama & Piippo Contemporary), who has an upcoming residency at ISCP, NY with an Alfred Kordelin foundation scholarship; and Andreas Johansson (represented by Copenhagen galleri flach), revealing his sculptural photo-collages for the first time stateside. A dozen German galleries, plus 30 attendees across the United States, and galleries hailing from throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, Latin America and Africa fill out this years exhibitors.

Aside from convenient public access by subway or taxi, visitors can reach VOLTA NY’s prime location just off 5th Avenue with shared shuttles directly between The Armory Show on Pier 94 and the VOLTA NY site opposite The Empire State Building on 34th Street. In addition, visitors can purchase a combination ticket for both VOLTA NY (regular $15) and our partner fair The Armory Show (regular $30) online for a discounted price of $40.
