Art is a kind of belief. As the belief makes up a person’s whole life, making art becomes this person’s whole life, too. In my work, however, there is hardly any enlightening signals other than the cross symbol. I have to admit that my work seems pale and weak in this chaotic society; it seems unimportant, and artists, as a result, also seem unimportant. My work does not probe into the current social situation: beauty and ugliness; good and evil; politics, power, lust, or slaughter. But it doesn’t mean I’m not hopeful or not responsive. Quite the opposite, I want to submit my last piece of criticism using almost the most wicked method of mankind; that is, the contempt of all civilization. Yes, I despise the current situation of mankind. What, then, does the cross mean in my work? I want to remind us that besides human beings, there is the Almighty God.
Preserved Ham is a sculpture made of silicone, based on a prototype of myself. With this work I’d like to investigate the relationship between man and god, reveal the nature of life, and the relationship between art and religion. As a gift to god, this piece stands for my decades of belief, but it is not its purpose to probe directly into the relationship among people, people’s relationship with the environment, or the issues of lust and slaughter. With installations such as Let me make a decision after thinking carefully, and Crystal Diamond, and the oil painting Beijing I have no intention to explore anything. The cross symbol in these pieces has its own rich significance, and that to me, is enough.
