“The Joy of My Reality” is art project curated by Biljana Ciric and Hu Yuanxing and will be featured in media such as newspapers and magazines in an effort to integrate art into the every day people’s life. Thanks to the co-operation of Art World Magazine and Oriental Morning Post, the project will be presented in print media monthly and daily. Later, it will build into its own online presentation.
The project began in June of 2006 with these two print media and will go on for one year, until the beginning of 2007.
The project consists of three parts. First, the incorporation of the essays of foreign and local curators and critics discussing the large scale exhibitions of contemporary art and the other issues. Second, the project aims to establish a platform for young Chinese intellectuals, musicians, architects, writers and philosophers. The attempt is also to explore the practice of people working in different fields and to bridge the gap between those fields in order to have a more interdisciplinary practice in the future. Third and finally, the project hopes to create an artist’s project that will first take place in Art World Magazine, then in the Oriental Morning Post. From here, the artists’ works will be developed as a work in progress so that art will change and evolve in the different mediums, from one print media to another. During the one-year project, the number of artists will increase and their new works will in turn be included.
The works done by artists are similarly seen as dependent on historical, cultural and social conditions reflecting societally relevant cultural phenomenon. For the print media project, artists from all over China will participate (Beijing, Hangzhou, Shanghai, GuangZhou, SiChuan…) using this opportunity to utilize the public media to express their idea and to send the message out to a large audience.
With the rise of the Chinese art market and with the increasing globalization of today’s world, such Chinese contemporary art may even be seen more abroad than locally. Large scale exhibitions and biennales have become a part of Chinese cities’ tourist policy with the artists’ works shown in such great numbers. Simultaneously, shows have been turning into cultural entertainment these days, but with local audiences still not fully grasping contemporary art practices and issues that artists are most concerned with.
The message of “The Joy of My Reality” lies in the local issues that are close to the artists, to their own living environments. These issues are ones that are probably very close to our everyday life, but yet not discussed in the public.
The aim of the print media works is to reach out to the audience themselves since, through buying the publication, you can own the piece. “The Joy of My Reality” project is also part of the larger “Kassel Documenta” that will happen in 2007.
“Kassel Documenta 12” opened up dialogue between around 70 magazines, journals and online media based all over the world by trying to foster discussion between “Kassel” and these numerous publications. The project will also be presented in its English version on the web site that “Kassel” established for the journal project. One of the participating artists, Shi Yong, is working on his project and needs your support. Please visit the web site: http://www.shiyong-art.com/
