I almost always begin from the need to express a feeling and in response to what happens to me in real life. I choose the medium; oil paint on stretched canvas usually, but also water color, pencil, pastel, etc., on paper. There are alternating stages when formal aspects decide procedure and then again, I often refer back to an original perception in order to regain balance and a sense of the ground under my feet. Sometimes a painting takes off in an entirely new direction, irrespective of original intention.
