Image Four years ago a former student paid a visit to my studio and introduced me to Johanna, a performance artist who became a friend and the subject of a variety of paintings and drawings.

The performance was a eulogy in memory to a member of the group who had passed away from aids. The performance was a combination of camp, humor, angst and dramatic theater blended into a cyber gothic tribal event. The blend of all this carried with it implications that I wanted to touch on in the painting “At Mother”. I choose to paint from life to allow the experience of real moments with each individual to influence the process. As each person posed over many hours in my studio, I found in these individuals the sublime, expressing pathos for the longing of something between the memory of the past and the eternal. Both pathos and dignity were revealed.
