"Solution Proposition," a series of one dozen photographs accompanied by autobiographical text, is both an experimental concept and a real life action project. It seeks to draw attention to a widespread social phenomenon that nonetheless remains a social taboo: prostitution. Through her own words and photographs (designed with the help of photographer Xu Yong), co-creator Yu Na tells her true-life story as a former bar hostess and call girl. In each photo, Yu Na holds a button that controls the camera shutter; she is the one with her finger on the button, the one in control of each scene. Thus is her identity and status transformed from prostitute to artist. It is both an artistic and a real life transformation, for Yu Na has substituted the sale and display of her physical charms for the sale and display of her artwork. With the proceeds from the sale of these photographs, Yu Na seeks to change her life and elevate her status, a proposition that seems to offer a very satisfactory solution.
In the end,“Solution Proposition” is a powerful commentary on the decadence underlying China’s "new affluence."
