Scope Fair 2013: This Year’s New Talent

We caught up with Scope to find out who to watch this year. Scope has it’s pulse on the emerging market and this year they will feature 55 international galleries alongside 20 Breeder Program galleries. Here are five names you’ll wanna look for: SIT, Amy M. Ho, Ursla Burke, Shiro Masuyama and Eddie Villanueva.
Dutch artist SIT creates paintings and sculptures that are not so easy to sit with. SIT’s characters, human beings and animals return us our Western obsession with banality, superficialities and materialism.
Artist Amy M. Ho is a must watch. Ho creates rooms for us to explore using projections or backlit images of architectural models. Her site-specific light-filled environments recall the Light and Space artists of the 1960’s.
Eddie Villanueva’s circuit piece is a tour de force. Villanueva deconstructs and recombines materiality into new and illuminating motifs. His use of formal innovation allows him to recombine art from other periods to create new visual experiences altogether.
Ursula Burke’s multi-media based works are personal, social and quietly moving. Her porcelain pieces combine 18th century aesthetics with an ironic approach.
Masuyama studied architecture and focuses on conceptual art. And he is something of an artist-nomad, having worked all over the world. This piece, using a Japanese flag, tv set and work table, hints at notions of representation and identity with surprising results.
