The starting points for these works are aspects of the urban environment, usually as framed by (and glimpsed through) windows or doorways. Shapes, surfaces, textures and spatial relationships all play a part in the development of the work. The uncertainty of visual perception is another ‘inspiration’ for these artworks. So too is my interest in the ‘aesthetics of the ordinary’. A series of opposites also plays a role in the creation of the paintings – presence and absence, the surface and what lies beneath, abstraction and representation, the actual and the implied. This play of opposites adds to the meditative quality in the work.
