Platform China is a Beijing-based multi-function art organization, established since 2005. The main aim of Platform China is to develop and promote contemporary art in China and to build up a platform for cultural exchange and dialogue between Chinese and international artists. Its main gallery (1,100sq.m) is located in Caochangdi—a newly developed art district in Beijing; we also possess six work-live artists’ residency studios and a project space located at the centre of 798 art district in Beijing.Platform China is more than just a gallery. Our starting point not only lies in the use of the spaces, but also in the diversity of the programs (from visual art and film to music, new media and all the other cutting-edge art forms), events and exhibitions we put on. The goal of Platform China is to create an open artistic environment in which contemporary art in all its different identities can be created, shown, and discussed. We discover, support and promote young Chinese artists and promote international artists’ recognition in China. Platform China also promotes contemporary art through publishing, curating, and managing art projects nationally and internationally. In 2006, Platform China has cooperated with P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center and organized a Chinese video art exhibition—The Thirteen: Chinese Video Now. The show was successfully showed in New York, Beijing and South Hampton (UK).
The director of Platform China, Sun Ning, is also known as a curator of contemporary Chinese Art, especially video art. In spite of Platform China Gallery, she also curated shows for other international art organizations. In 2006, she co-curated the Chinese video show with the famous UK curator David Thorp at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center. She was also a curator of a special video show of 13 international video artists during Art Beijing 2007.
Platform China also runs a residency program—Beijing International Artist Platform (BIAP) that provides international artists with an opportunity to live and work in China. The aim of BIAP is to establish an artistic and cultural channel through which international artists can gain a deeper understanding of China and to communicate with Chinese artists.
Moreover, Platform China has been working closely with international foundations such as Netherlands Foundation for Arts, Design and Architecture, Norwegian Contemporary Art Office, Red Mansion Foundation, British Council, and Goethe Institute. Through their support, lots of international artists and curators gained a unique experience in China while more Chinese artists are getting internationally acknowledged through our endeavor and activities.
