Peter Greaves is a young American artist, born in 1977 in Binghamton, New York. His show at the Forum Gallery (745 Fifth Avenue, New York City) runs through October 23, 2004, and is fittingly titled "Reverie." It is a reverie of implied narrative. All of the works are portraits of young women. The works’ titles– Barbara, Laini, Aubry, Violet, and Erica –suggest the contemporary loveliness of their subjects. Each of the rather diminutive works (composed in either pencil on paper or oil on tempered hardboard) implies a story of intimacy. Whether it is love, affection, or a familial relation, the emotion behind every portrait commands close attention to the contours of the subject’s face, expression and painterly significance.
