Patricia Secco’s beautiful color surfaces reminiscent of silky, luscious fabrics where color is never what we think, and their values depend on the direction and quality of light affecting them. These backgrounds capture the eye’s attention for the natural ease with which they are organized. Against these pools of color, she sometimes juxtaposes abstract symbols that, at first glance, gives us the impression that the painting stops there. But even in those paintings that appear to be abstract, which I understand she has constructed as landscapes, and among all her works are my personal favorites, color is not the only presence inhabiting the painting. Imprecise, sign-like color strokes, like mumbling words lay beneath the layers of material. One’s eye wanders through them attempting to decipher their unfamiliarity, as when lost with no other reference in the woods.
