| I was born near Halloween, and according to some New Age book, on the “Day of Research.” Which is fitting considering as an artist I am constantly searching through books, stacks of images, text hunting and gathering. If I weren’t an artist, maybe I’d fancy forensics. My work is the result of combining all of this data to tell a new story. I’m attracted to mysteries, ghosts, fantasy, fashion, and voyeurism. Most often my work is inspired by women. I am drawn to women of all eras, but especially rebellious ladies who perhaps strayed from convention. I watch a lot of movies and have a fondness for coming-of-age dramas. I also love the Glam-70s mismatched socks and platforms, and that taxi driver look. I suppose the androgyny of the 80s was an inspiration when I was younger. I liked the explosion of accessories that appeared in the 80s. |

They all inspire me to want to create new things by layering many elements of old things combined with new. I’m really into a colorful palette. The way things compositionally appear, or piling things on top of each other on paper with watered-down paints appeals to me. In my paintings I like to pinpoint the moment that may have existed, and leave clues or predictions for what may happen next. I’ve always been attracted to accidents and mistakes, and love things that are well worn. When I am working, I like to get lost in music or what’s happening outside my window. I prefer to paint at night, when everyone else is asleep. That way there are fewer distractions.
I’ve always been more attracted to unconventional beauty. I suppose it’s the things that make people unique that I am drawn to. I love models from the 60s like Penelope Tree with her large alien eyes and mesmerizing face. My muses tend to be women with gaps in their teeth, great profiles, and electric hair colors. I receive amazing e-mails from young women all over the world, who tell me their stories, and that they somehow have been inspired by my work. Often they are asking how to make the transition from high school to college and then enter an art field. I love that these young women are taking hold of their destiny. I always say, “Start doing artwork as much as you can, do things for free, get your work out there, relax, and let go of fear.”
