Secret Crater Art
Two years ago, not long after he turned 45, Ed Sweeney made a list of things to do before he died. Take his wife to Machu Picchu. Take his young son to see the space shuttle launch. And, what is proving to be most challenging, visit the Roden Crater, an extinct volcano northeast of Flagstaff, Ariz., that James Turrell has been transforming into a work of perceptual and celestial art since the late 1970s. 9/11-Inspired Artist
Since emerging in the vanguard of artists using large-scale color photography in the late 1970s, Richard Misrach has established a unique place for himself through a series of works that examine the fragile relationship between humankind and the world it inhabits. His ongoing Desert Cantos project, which he began in 1979 and parlayed into a book in 1987, focuses on our society’s perennial disrespect for nature. Other published projects include Bravo 20: The Bombing of the American West (1990), Violent Legacies (1992), and Cancer Alley (2000), commissioned by the High Museum in Atlanta.
