    Hirst Big Spender

Damien Hirst may have lost his title as the most expensive living artist at auction to Jeff Koons in New York last week, but he can still claim to be not only the richest artist in the world but also the one who spends the most on art.  Bidding anonymously by telephone last Wednesday, he splashed out $33 million (£15.9 million) at Sotheby’s on a 14in by 12in self-portrait by Francis Bacon – easily a record for a small painting by Bacon, and surely one for an artist buying at auction.  (Colin Gleadell for Telegraph, November 20, 2007)

    "Lady" Stripped

After unlocking the secrets of the Mona Lisa, a French scientist has turned his all-seeing "multispectral" camera on a lesser-known Leonardo da Vinci muse in Poland: the Lady with an Ermine.  Engineer and inventor Pascal Cotte virtually strips away centuries of sometimes sloppy restoration work to provide a digital image of a painting as it may have left the artist’s studio, an abiding question among art historians and art lovers about such masterpieces.
