Natalie Frost works broadly in the medium of print, producing pieces in Braille, laser-cut vinyl, neon, and screen print. Materials and visual content are sourced from familiar mass published/printed items such as public information documents, branding, currency, and wallpaper. Looking increasingly at text and the boundaries of what we define and recognize as language, her work responds to current affairs examining issues of threat and power. The work is often text-based, considering the boundaries of what we define, recognize, and understand language to be both culturally and formally.

A screen print duplicates a public information document, Preparing for Emergencies, issued by the U.K. Home Office in the wake of the September 11th attacks. The pamphlet highlights the possibility of a threat in public spaces, offering guidance on reducing the risk of injury or death by explosion. Underlining the interchangeable nature of such advice in apparently contrasting contexts, this is the Arabic version designed for the U.K.’s Iraqi community. Whiteout is a series of Braille documents rotated 90 degrees. The work describes visually and in prose the artist’s experience of extreme blizzard conditions during a brutal journey taken in the Scottish Highlands.
