style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Last year at the Sundance Film Festival, I ran into Yvonne Sewell-Ruskin. She gave me a VHS short about the notorious max’s kansas city. Aside from being an extremely well put together little film, the come-hither seductiveness of that scene reached out and grabbed all who saw it. A full length documentary is in the works. Yvonne is seeking any and all film or video footage of that era that may be hidden away. style="mso-spacerun: yes">
About:
The max’s kansas city project is a 501C3 non-profit, dedicated to serving the arts. The mission of the max’s projects is to minimize the suffering of those in need by providing emergency funding and resources to financially distressed individuals in the arts for housing, medical aid and legal aid. (Special consideration is given, but not limited to max’s extended family). The organization was founded in 2001 by Yvonne, in memory of her late ex-husband, Mickey Ruskin. Mickey was the creator of max’s kansas city, the seminal club once located at 213 Park Avenue South, NYC. The place where Andy Warhol held court nightly, Aerosmith got signed to a record contract, Debbie Harry of “Blondie” waitressed, and Sargent Shriver met transvestite Jackie Curtis. It flourished from December of ’65 to the spring of ’81. According to Andy Warhol, “…max’s kansas city style=’font-size:8.0pt;font-family:Verdana’> was the exact spot where Pop Art and Pop Life came together…” The organization is also developing programs to educate youth on the dangers of substance abuse and addiction.
