Matthew Bates paints in the style of modern realism. His oil paintings are the result of a personal journey in which he delves into the minute details of daily life. In his cityscapes he looks for places where the design of the buildings blends together with the people passing by. To do this he takes many photographs and makes a collage which he puts together as a large digital image. This image, often larger than life, is then carefully transferred by hand to the canvas where the real adventure begins. Since all details are taken into consideration, one painting may take many months to complete. Not content with just his cityscapes, Bates paints a myriad of other subjects such as flowers, landscapes and still life paintings.
