Though graffiti has been popular since the 1960s, it wasn’t until the early 80s and Fab Five Freddy’s rendering of an Andy Warhol soup can on a subway train, Basquiat’s SAMO musings and Haring’s cartoon-like tags that the mainstream art world recognized graffiti as art.
