Korean Venus

When I was a child, I believed that I would have blonde hair and blue eyes one day. That’s because whenever I was watching movies from the West, all Western actors and actresses spoke Korean very well—films were dubbed in Korean. I also thought that I would become a super star like Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, or Barbie Doll. It all made sense to me. Next, I thought I would meet a beautiful and rich prince from an outer galaxy with purple eyes and a Western face. At the end of the story I would marry him and we would live happily ever after like Cinderella in her fairytale. Now I am more mature, of course. Reality has sunk in. Still very often, there is something exciting floating like the color pink (between white and red) in my mind of a mystery.

As I used to dream of being a beautiful blue-eyed, blonde lady as a child, I was horrified one day when the middle school principal asked me to cut my hair to 3 centimeters in length. An angel from heaven with glittering blonde hair and the most glorious ocean-blue eyes came to me and whispered softly in my ears, “Don’t shed any tears, my darling. Look into the mirror. You will always have beautiful silky blonde hair and blue eyes that others can’t see.”

In my work, apart from Venus, who heads the group, there are five categories of blondes such as iconic blonde, historical royalties, fictional Manga figures, and a number of girls who moved up in their social status because of their connection with a man. Thrown into different situations and costumes, these blondes with Asian muscular frames start to mix within Western and Eastern traditional algorism, as well as other symbolism and metaphors that can be found. The work can be interpreted as the result of an artist’s light-hearted expression in a “West vs. East Crash.”

13 of Blondes is based on The Last Supper from Leonardo da Vinci being the most recognized painting in the Western world. Also in Korea The Last Supper is one of the most important paintings in art history. In my picture the background scene is composed of 13 blondes in front of the Baekdu Mountain Range, the largest mountain in Korea. This is the most significant mountain to the South Koreans, despite the fact that it is located in North Korea and cannot be reached without a government’s permit. Therefore, we call this mountain the “Closer but Far” mountain.

The Secret, all girls wear black leather dresses with sakura (the cherry blossom) color skin. I’m concerned with exposing or subverting the concealed contexts of cultural inventions in Korea, where they are hidden, especially those relating to issues of sexuality. After all, it could be a more ironic metaphor of lingering Western fetishism of the “Oriental” female from Western viewers’ gaze.

An Asian girl with blonde hair and blue eyes, who could never exist in real life, and Mountain Baekdu located in North Korea, which cannot be reached proclaim my whole idea of a fantasy world mixed with reality. My imagination is composed of all pinky components above, and my future story would be associated with this fantastic plastic world.

어린 시절부터 나는 ë‚´ê°€ 어른이 되면 아주 당연하게도 파란 눈에 금발을 가지게 될 것이라 믿었다. 매주 토요일 ë°¤, 주말의 영화에 나오는 마릴린 몬로나 그레이스 켈리 같은 할리우드 여배우들처럼, 혹은 나의 가장 친한 친구 바비인형처럼, 나도 어른이 되면 언젠가는   아름다운 금발과 파란 눈의 어른이 되리라 믿었다. 주말의 영화에 나오는 그들은, 너무나도 한국말을 (더빙 때문에) 잘했으며 나같이 선택 받은 어린이는 엄마아빠처럼 평범한 어른으로 자라는 것이 아니라 디즈니에 나오는 신데렐라공주처럼, 그리고 아주 결국에는 백마를 탄, 아주 잘 생기기고 돈도 많으며 보라색의 눈을 가진 외계의 별에서 온 왕자를 만나 결혼해서 동화책의 주인공처럼 살게 되리라 믿었다.  물론 세상의 이치를 알아가고 있는 오늘날의 나는 지금의 현실 속에서 ì‚´ì•„ 가고 있다. 그러나, 아직도 조금은 ê·¸ 어린 날의 들떠있는 나를 보기도 한다. 그때의 나는 어쩌면 철없이 공상에서만 ì‚´ê³  있었다고 한다면 지금의 나는, 단일화된 문화 속에서, 사회 속에서 혹은 나 자신의 아이덴티티에 대한 정의 속에 줄곧 들떠 있는 나를 발견하곤 하는 것이다. 

중1때의 어느 ë‚ , 그것은 마치 환상이었는지 아니면 í•œ 여름의 꿈이었는지 정확히 기억이 나지 않는다. ë‚´ê°€ 다녀야 하는 여자중학교에서는 머리카락을 귀밑 3cm를 잘라야 하는 규정이 있었기 때문에 중학교입학 ì „ë‚  미용실에서 3ë…„ ë‚´ë‚´ 고이 길렀던 머리카락을 쌀뚝 자르고 너무나 슬퍼서 엄마의 화장대 앞에서 불을 끄고 혼자서 엉엉 ìš´ 적이 있었다. 그때 나는 갑자기 하늘에서 내려온 천사를 보았다. 너무나 아름다운 그녀는 물결치는 너무나 눈부신 금발에 바다를 닮은 파란 눈, 진주보다도 하얀 피부를 가지고 있었다. 나는 깜짝 놀랐지만 그녀의 부드러운 미소에 곧 진정이 되었고 나에게 상냥하게 다가오는 그녀는 나의 귀에 살포시 속삭이기 시작했다. “이제 눈물을 멈추고 자. 거울을 ë³´ë ´, 너에게는 이제부터 다른 사람들 눈에는 보이지 않는, 너만이 ë³¼ 수 있는 이렇게 아름답고 찬란한 금발머리가 있단다.”  마치 초록색 지붕의 빨간 머리 앤이 그녀의 친구 다이앤에게 들려주었던 공상의 세계처럼, ë‚´ê°€ 힘들 ë•Œ 마다 나는 그날의 천사가 나에게 속삭였던 말을 ë’¤ 새기곤 한다.

비너스를 주축으로 시작된, 13 of Blondes의 작업은 5가지의 금발의 카테고리를 가진다. 신데렐라, 그레이스 켈리 그리고 제인 오스틴의 ‘오만과 편견’의 첫째 딸로 등장하는 제인 베겟 처럼 백마 탄 왕자나 부자인 남자와의 결혼으로 신분 상승한 금발, 패리스 힐튼, 다이애나, 마릴린 몬로 같은 미디어 스타인 금발, 그리고 여신인 비너스, 베르사유 장미의 오스카, 캔디캔디의 캔디, 바비 인형같이 동양인 소녀에게 특별한 의미를 지니는 금발과 벨라스케스가 자주 초상화를 그려주었던 스페인의 왕녀 마그리타, 마리앙뜨와네트 그리고 엘리자 베스 여왕1세와 같은 진짜 왕족의 금발여인들. 이 금발의 여인들은 동양인의 얼굴과 체구에 서양의 문화가 뒤섞여 있는 출발선상에서, 상징적이고 은유적인 표현인 동시에 동양과 서양의 전통적인 알고리즘을 대변한다.

13 of Blondes 는 레오나르도 다빈치의 "최후의 만찬"을 기반으로 두고 있다. 많은 작가들이 그의 작업을 응용해왔었다. 대부분의 그들이 비쥬얼적인 효과 때문에 ‘최후의 만찬’을 패러디 했다면, 나는 ê·¸ 그림이 가지고 있는 본래의 의미 때문에  ‘최후의 만찬’ 에 기본을 ìž¡ê³  싶었다. 가장 서양적이고, 유명하며, 가장 르네상스적인 최후의 만찬을 패러디 했으며, 그리고 가장 현대 사회의, 그리고 아시아 여성적인 방법으로 표현하였다.

‘최후의 만찬’ 그것은 예수님의 부활을 의미하는 것이다. 부활, 그것은 새로운 현대 아시아 미술의 부활로 나에겐 인식되게 되었다. 아직도 유럽의 많은 사람들은 아시아 미술 하면 박물관에 걸려진, 미인도나 서예 등의 그림이나 작품을 생각하게 된다. 그들의 아시아에 대한 인식은 아주 박물관적이다. 그렇지만 최근 많은 미국의 유럽의 미술관에서 중국, 한국의 현대 작가를 위주로 한국 현대 작업이 재조명 되고 있다. ë‚´ê°€ 부활의 주제인 다빈치의 ‘최후의 만찬’을 응용한 이유도 현대 아시아 미술의 재 부활이라는 의미에 중점을 두었기 때문이다.

자화상들과 13 of Blondes, The Secret, The True의 모든 작업들의 동작들은 부처님의 수인들에서 응용했으며 서예글씨들은 실제 모델의 일생과 그들이 생전에 했던 말들을 조사한 내용들이다. 금발의 파란 눈의 여성들이지만 신윤복의 미인도 같은 한국화를 응용했다. 늘 나 자신을 인터네셔널한 인간이라 믿어왔지만 미술입시 시절 강조되어온 한국의 여백의 미를 어느덧 찾고 있는 나를 런던에서 발견하게 된 것이다.

13 of Blondes의 배경은 백두산을 그린 것이다. 동양얼굴에 금발의 파란 눈은 어쩌면 생물학자의 눈에는 아주 아이러니하게 보여질 것이다. 백두산 역시 우리나라의 산이지만, 남한과 북한으로 나누어져 있는 우리의 상황을 볼 때 정치적으로나 실제적으로나 가장 아이러니한, 가장 가깝고도 먼 산인 것이다. 상상과 현실이 공존하는 나의 사진 작업의 백두산은 그렇기 때문에 가장 완벽한 나의 산인 것이다.

나의 상상과 현실은 분홍색적인 요소들을 가지고 있다. 순백의 흰색도, 정열의 빨간색도 아닌 어딘가 모르게 들떠 있는 색, 이상하게 요상하지만 미워 할 수 없는 색, 아이도 어른도 아닌 소녀 같은 색. 어쩌면 내가 여전히 판타스틱 플라스틱 요지경 세상에 살고 있기 때문일지도 그런지도 모르겠다.
