My abstract paintings are attempts to control the uncontrollable. Each painting is a sequence of physical, chemical, gravitationally bound events. Paints pour, bleed, run, drip, clump, fight, blend, confuse the image and the object, and otherwise generally misbehave.
I struggle with these demanding and narcissistic materials, developing their internal conflicts into outward appearances. Painting becomes a contest between my desire for form, narrative, and beauty matched against the painting’s unimpeachable chemical nature. The result is a moment of art unadulterated and direct, a painting that declares itself as image, index and object all at once.
