Jim Gaylord’s current work is based on studies painted on acetate over film stills. In his most recent paintings, he isolates moments of destruction from the "Final Destination" film series, in which people succumb to spectacular and unlikely accidents. Drawing on a tradition of epic painting, these works literally abstract the narrative moment, meticulous figuration with obscure forms that are both familiar but unrecognizable. The result is uncanny explosions.
