International Top NewsFCA’s 2008 Grants to Individuals
The
Foundation for Contemporary Arts is pleased to announce its 2008 Grants to Individuals. Twelve unrestricted grants of $25,000 each, a total of $300,000, are to be awarded to artists in the United States and abroad. “The Foundation for Contemporary Arts is pleased to be able increase the number of Grants to Individuals awards from ten to twelve this year as a result of increased support from artists and others,” said Stacy Stark, Executive Director. “As unqualified support for individual artists is increasingly rare, the Foundation, which has long been sustained by artists itself, is working to grow both the number of grantees and the size of its awards.” (FCA, January 8, 2008) Read more >> Henri Chopin
Henri
Chopin(1922–2008), the French avant-garde poet, musician, and performer, died on January 3, reports the Poetry Foundation. The cause of death was not reported. Known primarily as a concrete and sound poet, Chopin created a large body of pioneering recordings using early tape recorders, studio technologies, and the sounds of the manipulated human voice. He also worked assiduously to disseminate avant-garde art, designing and publishing the classic audiovisual magazines Cinquième Saison and OU between 1958 and 1974. These publications brought together writers and artists from the Lettrism and Fluxus movements, as well as Ian Hamilton Finlay, Brion Gysin, William S. Burroughs, and many others.
