Guerrilla Erotic Art – Geoffrey Ashley
“Still photos of naked ladies” are not all I shoot. But sexy, fun, attention-grabbing images of intriguing women are the primary focus of my work. My images have been called “edgy,” “pulsating” and “erotic.” But my favorite description is “sensual, funny, warm photos of women who look real.”
I infuse my photographs with an editorial sensibility to create imagery that is raw, provocative and artistic. It is a versatile style that, with just a minor twist, can become truly erotic or cutting-edge commercial.
Born and raised in Kansas, I currently live in Hollywood, most likely as some hellish cosmic payback for some very bad behavior in a past lifetime. I started in photojournalism, where the necessity of capturing unexpected, real-life moments, ranging from the joyful to the dangerous, quickly honed my spontaneous, minimalist style. I’ve adapted that style to my art and commercial photography.
I’m a guerrilla shooter and I don’t over-think my art. I compose from the gut. I light only as necessary. And I don’t waste time on anything extraneous. My focus is always on the model. And my approach allows me to devote all my attention to finding her essence, capturing a moment, preserving a fleeting expression and giving the viewer a visceral experience whether it’s erotic, cute, sexy or silly.
I don’t know what “fine art” is. And “tasteful” is just a meaningless buzz word people use to justify looking at images they like and shunning images they don’t. I shoot what I want and let the work speak for itself. People either like it or they don’t and either way I’m intrigued by their responses.
My credits include national advertising campaigns; the alternative model site SuicideGirls.com; the popular gallery sites Michelle7.com and OurEyes.net; and the “Intimacy Project” at CompletelyNaked.co.uk, which brings together intriguing and often erotic, images of modern intimacy from artists around the world.
Why “Still Photos of Naked Ladies?” First off, naked or not, my models are all ladies and they have my utmost admiration and respect for sharing themselves with my art. Second, though they are “still photos,” my images have qualities of movement and narrative that transcend their lack of motion. So, I use the term somewhat ironically. And third, it’s just catchy branding, an important consideration in a world where marketing is everything. Can Still Photos of Naked Ladies: The Coffee Table Book be far behind? Man, I hope not.
