First International Design Award In Britain

    The
U.K.’s first international design award, the Brit Insurance Designs of
the Year, will be announced next week in London by the Design Museum,
the Guardian reports. The 100 designs vying for the prize, intended as
the design world’s answer to the Turner Prize, include architect Thomas
Heatherwick’s East Beach Cafe in Littlehampton; Christoph Behling’s
solar-powered shuttle boat; a spring-summer clothing collection by
Giles Deacon; 10,000 silver bicycles installed in Paris last summer and
available to rent by the hour; and the Nintendo Wii game console. The
shortlist spans seven categories including fashion, transport, and
furniture, the winners of which will be announced on March 11. The
overall winner will be announced a week later. (Artinfo, Frebruary 6, 2008)

    Damien Hirst’s Art Shop

Damien Hirst has passed the test to open his first art shop. Hirst
signed a 10-year lease on a space in Marylebone, but the building’s
owners interviewed the bad-boy Brit artist before they let him move in.
The store will boast the same name as Hirst’s publishing company, Other
Criteria, and is set to open this spring. Other Criteria will sell
everything from Hirst’s own and others’ artworks to T-shirts. Among the
first items up for grabs will be Happy Head, a plastic skull covered in
gloss paint, with a £25,000 ($49,000) price tag. An 18-carat gold charm
bracelet featuring different types of pills as the charms will set you
back £250,000, while a set of 12 plates decorated by the artist is
    priced at £10,000. (Artinfo, February 6, 2008)
