British Curators Up in Arms Over Cut-Rate Public Art

    Curators
and public officials in Britain are saying too many commissioned public
artworks have gone awry and calling for artistic controls to be imposed
upon commissions, the Times (London) reports. Marjorie Trusted, senior
curator of sculpture at the Victoria and Albert Museum called many of
the works "disappointing, old fashioned, and awkward," while Tim Knox,

Spielberg Quits as Olympic Ceremonies’ Artistic Advisor In Protest Against China

    In
a sign of the possible politicization of the Beijing Olympics, film
director Steven Spielberg withdrew from his role as an artistic adviser
to the Olympic Games’ opening and closing ceremonies, citing China’s
connection to the government in Sudan and the controversy over Darfur,
report Peter Sanders and Geoffrey A. Fowler in the Wall Street Journal.
Spielberg had agreed to help design the Olympic ceremonies, but came
under attack beginning last March, when actress Mia Farrow publicly
accused him of helping to "sanitize Beijing’s image." (The Wall Street Journal, February 13, 2008)
