Through the medium of analog photography, Lorenza Lucchi Basili invites us to look at a new form of reality, a reality that emerges from the isolation of the structures that surround us. The effect is a powerful one, which develops into an entirely new perception of what is seen. Upon first critical look, one is driven to search for the familiar–some small fragment that may conclude the desire to look further. Given a moment of introspection, the viewer attempts to get oriented. New associations emerge with the series "Space fifty, Lille," which floats in the existing niches of the gallery walls. The two photographs that make up "Space forty-nine, Chicago," hang at opposite ends of the long and narrow space of the gallery. The dialogue between the two is the backbone of the entire exhibition, which it documents a phenomenon of refracted light, seen at one moment but not the next. The strategically suspended photographs of "Space fifty-one, Lille" have intensely sharp, contrasting lines that vibrate and link with the surrounding images, creating ever-changing geometric shapes that seem to undulate with the accompanying sound that reverberates from behind the walls, intensifying their movement, as if swaying with the earth. Overall, the work is successful in that it offers an insightful take on the nature of seeing by uncovering frequently overlooked and often hidden complexities of the world, and reminds us that sight is not purely mechanical.
