I see portraits as landscapes. I explore them in order to layer them with my own maps of orientation. I have always been fascinated by Darwin’s ideas of evolution. With my embroidery, I invent other possible evolutionary dimensions for the people pictured. I re-invent them and enmesh them into new forms of visual kinship. This is referenced in the parallel use of hair—another way to capture reality.

I have always used embroidery, sewing, and hair. I use all forms of thread as a way to capture images. It is my way of recording experiences. Writers do it by using written lines of words. They create stories, characters, and situations. I do the same with thread. I “write” my own possible worlds, with their characters and scenarios. Thread, embroidery, and hair is my current way of mark making, of visualizing stories.
