Within New York there is a plethora of creative outlets for the artist of any medium or genre. But with so many options becomes the burden of organization. This was so with the subject of documentary. A place was needed in which the New York audience could be exposed to documentary filmmaking on an intimate level, give filmmakers an outlet in which to embrace their genre, and of those in different artistic disciplines to be able to see the cross-section between themselves and documentary. And with that the DocNYC Festival came to be.

This was so with the subject of documentary. And with that the DocNYC Festival came to be.

In 2010, DocNYC Festival entered its inaugural year with a mission to elevate, expand, and embrace the definition of documentary. After a dynamic first round, the festival has returned to the Village with an even more engrossing lineup of film screenings, panel discussions, and award events. This year the festival has been organized into thirteen curated segments. The American Perspective section looks at films, which take on issues found through this country, while its counterpart, the International Perspective, does that for regions afar.

The Galas are for high profile screenings, while Icons host screenings of high profile individuals, and Special Events will see high profile guests.

The festival has even been sincere enough to include an In-Case-You-Missed-It program titled Short-List. In this there holds four films that have already been premiered and may very well be the ones to watch out for come awards season. The festival also includes two competition series: Viewfinders-ten films, all with a global perspective, and Metropolis-a competition highlighting seven films focused on New York City.

*** The festival runs from November 2nd to the 10th with events to be hosted at IFC Center, NYU’s Skirball Theater, and NYU’s Kimmel Center.
