Please join us in the Caochangdi Art District from 12:00 – 4:00 PM. The program begins with an AIDS ribbon-making workshop hosted by Galerie Urs Meile from 12:00 – 2:40 PM followed by a DWA intervention spreading awareness throughout the art district from 2:40 – 3:40 PM.
On December 1st 1989, A Day Without Art (DWA) was initiated by a group of art professionals in the United States. Over 600 museums, galleries and other arts institutions participated in DWA to raise international awareness about the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Events included gallery closings, temporary removal of artworks from gallery walls, memorial services, performances and educational programs. This year marks the 21st anniversary of DWA.
On December 1st 2008, 8 YGI’s and 2 supportive allies distributed over 1,000 AIDS ribbons to commuters on the subway. On December 1st 2009, 80 YGI’s and 20 supportive allies stationed themselves outside galleries in the 798 Art District, shrouded outdoor sculptures and handed out over 3,000 AIDS ribbons and student-designed stickers. This year, we hope to engage over 100 students and distribute more than 4,000 AIDS ribbons. We have partnered with international schools in Beijing and have asked selected galleries in the Caochandi Art District to allow the YGI’s to shroud one artwork inside and one artwork outside their space on December 1, 2010 from 2:20 – 3:40 PM. The YGI’s will be stationed outside the participating spaces spreading awareness by distributing AIDS ribbons and student-designed stickers. Alice Xiang, a senior at The Western Academy of Beijing, designed the sticker and Angela Chan, a junior at Beijing World Youth Academy, designed the DWA poster.
ChART Contemporary is an independent curatorial lab based between Beijing and New York, which is spearheaded by Megan and KC Vienna Connolly and dedicated to bringing together art & people. In a world where HIV/AIDS continues to spread at an exponential rate, ChART Contemporary mobilized the Young Guerrilla Informers (YGI’s) in 2008 to spread awareness and bring A Day Without Art to Beijing.
