“Sights for When the Sun Arrives” at the Pentimenti Gallery in Philadelphia is a group exhibition showcasing works by seven different artists in a variety of mediums, including graphite, acrylic, oil, gouache, and chromogenic print. As the title of the exhibition suggests, the works allude to what is not tangible: sensations of the ephemeral and the transient. Located in what was once a candy factory, the Pentimenti Gallery has thought provoking contemporary art in a well-designed industrial space.

Over one dozen artists from the Hudson Valley are showcasing their works, which bring together nature, science, architecture, design, and history, in the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art. The goals are to illustrate the range of subjects that come together when a work of art is created, and to reconcile the differences between the sometimes sterile studio environment with the works this environment produces.

For over four decades, James Montford has been making multimedia art that prompts the viewer to think about race, class, and social structure without being overtly political. Of the multi-media collages in this exhibition, Montford says, “I do not see the work as political, but as being more closely related to ‘a conversation’ in its broadest and most inclusive context.”

The works in oil, encaustic, photography, collage, and sculpture featured in “Reimagined” have all been made from recycled materials and found objects. One artist, Olive Farrell, uses discarded wine boxes to paint local landscapes in oil, and Dot Chast creates collages made of burlap, appliqués, and shiny fabrics. The works presented are varied, eclectic, and intriguing.
