CITY OF PHOENIX SEEKING ARTIST APPLICATIONS FOR THREE PUBLIC ART PROJECTS
by NY Arts
The Phoenix Arts Commission is seeking applications from artists
and artistic teams for three different public art projects:
· Arizona Canal at 24th Street – The purpose of this project is to develop
designs for bank enhancements along a three-quarter-mile section of the
Arizona Canal adjacent to the Squaw Peak Water Treatment Plant. The
selected artist(s) will help create unique outdoor spaces for educational,
recreational and cultural experiences, reminding us of the preciousness of
water in the desert environment. Contact Chris Kelley at
chris.kelley@phoenix.gov or 602-534-5084.
· Cesar Chavez Park Branch Library – The selected artist will participate
as a member of a design team working on a new 25,000-square-foot library
that will have striking views into the park and be a signature building.
In addition to public art, the library will be an energy efficient
demonstration project and feature sustainable architecture, wireless and
digital technologies, and a computer lab, meeting room and teen center.

· George Washington Carver Sculpture – A sculptor is sought to create a
life-size bronze figure of George Washington Carver, one of the nation’s
most celebrated scientists whose developments revolutionized agriculture
in the South. The sculpture will be a representational, non-stylized
portrait of a standing figure of Dr. Carver mounted on a four-sided base
with inscriptions. The sculpture will be installed at the entrance to the
George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center in central Phoenix.

These competitions are open to any professional artist or team
nationwide, with the exception of the Cesar Chavez Park Branch Library.
The Chavez Library project is a regional competition open only to artists
who live in Arizona, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Nevada, California and
Oregon.
The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15. General
application requirements include a current resume for each artist or team
member; 35mm slides of relevant work with an annotated slide list; a
one-page written statement of interest, qualifications and ideas; and a
self-addressed stamped envelope with sufficient postage for the return of
slides.
Budgets, exact submission requirements, selection criteria and
estimated timelines vary according to project. The selected artist or team
of artists will work with the Phoenix Arts Commission, various city
departments and neighboring communities to develop the final project
elements.
