PANEL DISCUSSION: THE ROLE OF THE (YOUNG) ARTIST IN THE CONTEMPORARY ART

    Friday, September 24, 3.30 – 5.30 pm

Conference Hall, Central House of Art
    Krymskiy Val, 10
    Moscow

Presentation of the film (Untitled) and panel discussion (in English) during the Art Moscow 2010 Program

    Participants in the panel:

Elsy Lahner, Curator, Vienna (Das Weisse Haus, http://www.dasweissehaus.at/wwwnew/en/index.html)
Marat Guelman, Julia and Marat Guelman Gallery, Moscow
    Nastya Marukhina, Moscow
Hans Knoll, Knoll Gallery Vienna & Budapest

The public and the professional art field have high expectations in the young artist.
Many believe the artist should function as an exemplary symbol – for high art, for success, for creativity, for varicolored visions of another world…..

But how does it work – or not work – in real life?

Using the film (Untitled) as a very up-to-date example the panel focuses on how contemporary art functions and how artists can find a role within the art business.
A second focal point will be the work of galleries as the links between the audience and the collectors and the galleries as a platform to realize new art.

How does the artist fit into our present-day circumstances? Which roles is he/she confronted with and what is the reality of each of these roles?

Who are an artist’s allies?  What is the structure of the professional art world?  How do these structures work and how does an artist find acceptance within these structures?

How does an artist’s career work or not work?   How is an artist’s work critiqued?

What is considered a successful career in the art world?
    How do galleries operate?
What is the role of the gallery owner? How does it the gallery operate financially?
What are the relations between the gallery and the artist and the collector?
    Wikipedia about (Untitled):
(Untitled) (2009) is a comedy film directed and written by Jonathan Parker, co-written by Catherine DiNapoli, and starring Adam Goldberg, Marley Shelton, Eion Bailey, and Vinnie Jones. The film was released on October 23, 2009 in the US.
Set in the artsy Chelsea, this satirical film centers on a young bohemian avant-garde composer Adrian (Goldberg), who becomes involved with a trendy New York art gallery owner, Madeleine (Shelton). Adrian is a composer who makes music by breaking glass and kicking metal buckets. In contrast to Adrian is his brother Josh (Bailey), a successful painter who happens to bring Madeline to one of his brother’s concerts. Madeleine is immediately drawn to Adrian’s work and invited him to perform at her gallery and into her bedroom. Eventually, Josh discovers the secret relationship between Madeleine and Adrian, and the fact that Madeleine has been using Josh’s paintings, which have commercial appeal, to keep the gallery running while it features more avant-garde work.
