After a lovely brunch at the Penguin Hotel’s front terrace restaurant on Ocean Drive, we attended the phenomenal performances of the overlooked Czech conceptualist, Jiřί Kovanda, whose re-enactment of his actions and installations from the 70s in the nearby Lummus Park were a highlight of the fair. Then on to the not-for-profit New Art Dealer’s Alliance Fair, a.k.a. “NADA,” located in a former film studio known as “The Ice Palace”. Replete with a plush lawn, palm trees, hammocks, and lounge chairs, the location seemed like a kind of mirage-like haven in the midst of the abandoned and cracked-out neighborhood it inhabited.

Replete with a plush lawn, palm trees, hammocks, and lounge chairs, the location seemed like a kind of mirage-like haven in the midst of the abandoned and cracked-out neighborhood it inhabited. There we witnessed Alexandre Singh’s brilliant performance, in the form of a slide lecture on mnemonic memory structures and Ikea. The fair’s halls proved to be equally as compelling, housing a host of top-caliber a work by a variety of international emerging artists. While installation and video were the overwhelming modus operandi of NADA artists, some of my favorite works on view were paintings. Even so, despite all the superb work, the verdict is in: sales have been low to non-existent for most of these dealers.

    NADA Top Five:

    1.    Molly Zuckerman paintings at Rowley Kennerk Gallery
    2.    Arjan van Helmond paintings at Galerie Juliètte Jongma
    3.    Yui Kugimaya paintings at Misako and Rosen Gallery
    4.    Philomene Pirecki paintings at Brown Gallery
    5.    Peggy Franck installation at Klerkx Gallery
