Using familiar iconography from a deep reservoir of fairytale and folklore Goicolea contructs compelling new mythic narratives that seem both alien and instantly recognisable. In his large-scale photographs, disparate groups gather mysteriously and with dubious motives in bleak, often unsettling landscapes. The imagery in these psychologically-charged compositions draws on a range of references from the Gothic literature of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to the hooded adolescents of contemporary films such as ‘The Blair Witch Project’ and ‘Donnie Darko’.
