I
decided to reunite with Mexican imagery of the Day of the Dead after a
recent trip to the Yucatan. While there I remembered my closeness to
Mexican artesanias and the effect that they have had on my sentiment
towards my heritage. These figures are of course mirrors reflecting to
us our lovely foolishness. Unlike the playfulness of the Day of the
Dead, Vanitas paintings are true caveats; indulge but beware. My
paintings lay somewhere in between. I love the accuracy and
finickiness of Vanitas painting and the joy of the Day of the Dead.
Perhaps it is no coincidence that I claim heritage in both traditions
but I have redirected the dialogue to indulge in my reflections on pop
culture. Fashion magazines and celebrity tabloids seem to posses all of
my guilty pleasures with a large dollop of absurdity. In my paintings
the skulls provoke anonymity, hopefully allowing for us all to reflect
on our own notions of beauty, pleasure and the absurdity of it all.
