Approximations/Contradictions is a web based work navigated by way of a menu that links the viewer to a series of what could be called performance portraits. Musicians perform the works listed while being videotaped in a popular classic portrait style; the centering of the subjects head and shoulders against a grey background immediately recalls a Sears-like portrait yet separates itself from this tradition by the use of a medium other than photography. The imposition of this photographic paradigm onto the medium of digital video underscores the lack of information conveyed by such formal artistic cliches. One wonders, for example, if the Vera Cooms performance of The Son is a performance at all or simply a woman in front of a camera with music in the background.
