The Argentinean artist Sebasti�n D�az Morales creates complex video installations that are experimental and apocalyptic in nature but contain the stark visual language of documentaries. D�az Morales was born in Comodoro Rivadavia in 1975 and has been presented at Museum Abteiberg, M�nchengladbach, NICC Antwerp, the Sao Paulo Biennale and the Berlin Biennale. |

The SMBA in Amsterdam will show the premiere of new videos through December 21, 2003. The new installations, under the title In A Not So Distant Future and curated by the director of SMBA Martijn van Nieuwenhuyzen, will include a series of five videos Water style=’font-size:8.0pt;font-family:Verdana;color:black’>, Box style=’font-size:8.0pt;font-family:Verdana;color:black’>, Handkerchief style=’font-size:8.0pt;font-family:Verdana;color:black’>, Dress/Undress style=’font-size:8.0pt;font-family:Verdana;color:black’> and Force style=’font-size:8.0pt;font-family:Verdana;color:black’> (2003) together with the diptych The Enigmatic Visitor (2003), The works were shot this past summer in Patagonia. In the videos, he explores the human condition in relation to nature by creating desolate environments to contain his characters. Also in the exhibition is a panoramic work depicting a dialogue between a soldier and a scientist, which strives to show the world of destruction, violence and war around them. The dialogue is based on excerpts from the novel Los Lanzallamas (The Flamethrowers) by the Argentinean writer Roberto Arlt (1900 – 1942), part two in his novel series Los Siete Locos (The Seven Madmen). |
