Jessica Burke

My paintings are a means of communication. They allow me to express my
reaction to issues about gender and sexuality, specifically
concentrating on the idea of femininity within the context of lesbian
stereotypes.I draw the human figure as a vehicle for the assertion of identity. This work deals with the isolation and compartmentalization of homosexuality. I wanted to clarify my questions and define my assertions about the fundamental role of femininity in society based on my own history and the various influences of my traditional mid-western upbringing, popular culture, the media and everything in between.
