Rob Arbouw’s black series of paintings, of black-grounded portraits of figures unknown, of figures reminiscent of a once-known mythology, perhaps Toltec or Tibetan or Druid, were painted during years in which he would divide his time between child-raising one week, and painting the next week.
The black might be an actualization of his father, who was a miner, and of the mystery of fatherhood; the colours a glowing forth of life forces, an energetic arborescence of surprise and chance.
