There are two portrait traditions, one the Sir Joshua Reynolds school with swaggering beauties, heroes and magnates who, despite their accoutrements of fashion, power and wealth, we never know at all. The other is the Rembrandt tradition, an attempt to portray the inner as much as the outer person. Frances Borden’s series of self-portraits where the two aspects of appearance and soul are painfully resolved is very much in the second tradition.
