Adela Vrinceanu: Over a 50 year career, Maestro Sergiu Celibidache has left many people and many countries with an indelible impression. His approach to music was second to none, and so much so that it actually stood out from the rest by his very rich sound experience. In addition, since the start of his career in Berlin, he has he taught all over the world. He has described teaching “as the most noble human activity.”
The festival here in Bucharest gathers the people who have worked and/or learned with him and allow them to pass on some of their knowledge and experience to the next generation for all to see.
The 2012 festival is the first one ever, marking 100 years from his birth. We have events to discover the Maestro including films, photo exhibitions and books. But live sound can only be transmitted via a live experience and this is in the hands of the artists, the performers that will share the principle of phenomenology in the master classes in May, and finally produce a concert in July.
NY ARTS: What are some of the highlights that visitors can expect?
AV: Starting with May 3rd and ending July 7th, we have many events such as a photo exhibition, 7 masterclasses, the launch of two books and concerts. A new film (besides the two academically acclaimed ones “Celibidache’s Garden” and “You dont do anything, you let it evolve”) made of the national television archives will be revealed and a world premiere of Sergiu Celibidache’s composition “Haz de necaz.”
In fact, the series of concerts in Bucharest opens with the taschengarten (the pocket garden) and closes with the world premiere of “haz de necaz” both original compositions by Sergiu Celibidache.
AV: Jan’s movie is a documentary of the Maestro’s work and beliefs. It is an interesting movie that has had international success.
Celibidache’s garden, an international awarded movie directed by his son, serge Ioan Celibidache, is a more illustrative film. Transcending Celibidache’s world, it will take the audience into an inner journey that goes beyond music.
The 3rd movie that we will present has been co-produced with Romanian National television and made of archival materials. It presents more of the Romanian side of Sergiu Celibidache.
The three films contain fascinating parameters. All of them present different facets of one character. The film that maybe illustrates his rich approach to music most is “Celibidache’s Garden” which underlines his approach towards Nature as the perfect metaphor and his conceptual underpinnings concerning musical form and phenomenon.
NY ARTS: Who are some of the leading performers at the festival this year?
AV: The emphasis is not so much on a star, which may take away the attention of the works, but really the focus is on the score, phenomenon and movement. Celi believed Romania had a very fruitful gathering of talents so we have decided to work with the best Romanian orchestras. And at the same time, hopefully raise public awareness about the gifted nation that is hiding behind his name and his nationality.
