Speckled textures of different paints grace the canvases of Zhang’s works. All carrying a heaviness in their surface and texture, these paintings place a strong emphasis on the materiality of the medium. Ornamented with swift, clean strokes as well as their thick leftovers, Zhang’s paintings’ have a varied application, arbitrary in nature, giving his pieces an element of surprise and unexpectedness.

These paintings have a surface quality that possesses a certain animation playing into the liveliness of the color scheme. In many of Zhang’s pieces there is a focus on the saturation of color and the pure vivacity of these electric and energized purples, blues, and reds. They add a heightened level of excitement to the atmosphere of the paintings. Zhang’s spectrum of subject matter ranges from still lifes to portraits found in nature (animals). Both subjects, however, possess the same verve and are approached with the same visual enthusiasm; bright colors and shades that are full of life and an active mark making that enlivens the subject matter, as well as the overall aesthetic experience.
