Creative Time: The Book exposes how Creative Time, the New York
City–based arts organization, has changed the notion of art in the
public realm over the past 33 years. Creative Time has made it possible
for more than 1,300 artists to create over 300 public works that have
enlivened and transformed the city. With contributions from Vito
Acconci, Lucy Lippard, Jenny Holzer, and an interview between Michael
Brenson and directors Anita Contini, Cee Scott Brown, and Anne
Pasternak, this volume initiates a dialogue between the voices and
imaginations of the most influential figures in the field of public
    art.

In addition to its documentation of history and the organization’s ideas, Creative Time: The Book
is also a portable public art project of its own. Using a device they
called the Urban Visual Recording Machine (UVRM), Hjalti Karlsson and
Jan Wilker recorded information about the weather conditions, colors,
and sounds of particular New York neighborhoods during the production
of the book. The data (rendered in real time) was processed and printed
on location every 30 seconds, producing thousands of “snapshots” of New
York City in the fall of 2006. Each image was used to make a unique and
original cover for every edition of the book.
