Gescheidle recently presented “Ruination, New Works on Paper,” an exhibition of recent drawings by Chicago-based artist Mark Adkins. The artist earned his MFA from the University of Texas at Austin in 1985 and his BFA from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Adkins currently works as a museum specialist at the Art Institute of Chicago. Adkin’s new drawings convey a ruined or abandoned society brought about by natural, long-term forces compounded by man’s own destructive tendencies. Human activity continues, both utilitarian and artistic, and seems to indicate an existence in which difficult decisions must be made, and in which resourcefulness is needed in order to survive.

Human activity continues, both utilitarian and artistic, and seems to indicate an existence in which difficult decisions must be made, and in which resourcefulness is needed in order to survive. Suggested is a symbiotic relationship between nature and the man-made, which may be of mutual benefit to both.
This is Adkin’s first solo show with Gescheidle. He has had group exhibitions with the Contemporary Art Workshop, Gescheidle and Klein Art Works in Chicago, as well as with Linda Ross Contemporary in Detroit. His work was included in the Evanston Art Center Biennial in 2004, 2002, 2000 and 1998, and was featured in New American Paintings in 2005. His drawings were also exhibited with Gescheidle at Frisbee (Miami) in 2005.
