    PHOTO NY Tips and Picks:

    Victor Cartagena:

Salvadoran-born Victor Cartagena has been making art in the Bay Area for more than a decade. The work that Cartagena produced in the early to mid-1990’s battled with memories of the violence in El Salvador and the pain and separation that he experienced in relocating to the U.S. Cartagena has moved beyond solely articulating the immigrant experience and tackles numerous social issues in the U.S. such as consumer culture, homelessness, and material waste. His artistic palette has also branched out to include sculpture, audio and video. Using time, space, and seemingly incoherent mechanisms, Victor creates unions between symbols that function at a practical level to inspire the viewer to question cultural, economic, and political topics as they relate to issues of individual identity.

    Graciela Sacco:

Shadows from the South and the North is the title for a series of works that investigate the impact of reflected light on different structures and surfaces. Both intimate and social environments are fundamental to the creation of these works; fleeting photographic marks are captured in the materialization of the shadows that appropriate and occupy the spaces. Graciela Sacco has been creating artwork for over 20 years, and she has pioneered the art of rendering images in ways that have transformed the manner in which people view contemporary art and photography. Her work uses different photosensitive processes, allowing her to materialize concepts in a unique way that places her at the forefront of contemporary art. Born in Argentina, Graciela has traveled throughout the world to exhibit her work. She has participated in numerous biennial exhibitions, including Havana, Mexico City, Venice, Sao Paulo, and Shanghai, to name a few. In addition, Graciela is frequently sought after as an instructor and lecturer, and she has recently been awarded the honor of teaching at the Atlantic Center for the Art in Florida, as a Master Artist. Her work has been included in major exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world including; Chile, Denmark, Argentina, Guatemala, Mexico, Brazil, England and France.

    Tracey Snelling

Influenced by film, landscape, books, and architecture, Tracey Snelling explores reality and scale through the use of sculpture, photography, and video. Mood, time, and a sense of place are captured and distorted. Old buildings, such as motels, are painstakingly recreated in small three-dimensional scale, with dust and weeds surrounding still-blinking neon signs. These sculptures are then photographed, videotaped, or transformed in other ways to further collapse the original object or place that is represented. Often, sound, smell, water, lights, or motors add to the experience of the works.

In the installation "Another Shocking Psychological Thriller", Snelling examines the idea of suspense and the position of women in those film genres. The three-channel, synchronized video moves from the house, to the landscape, to a drive-in screen, continually complementing and augmenting the narrative. Found footage from film noir and other genres, along with original footage, tell a story of murder, desire, and the search for salvation.

Jemima Wyman’s current work focuses on the physicality of the body and the particular relationships the body has with designated spaces and objects, emphasizing various performative characters and ‘screen sets’. Through installed video performances Wyman explores the interrelationships between fiction and reality, by presenting virtual space within the screen in association with actual objects/bodies located in the gallery. These lines of inquiry also result in photographic works and DVD editions. Jemima Wyman is an Australian artist working with installed performance based video and painting. She graduated from Queensland University of Technology with first class honours and is represented by Bellas Gallery in Australia. Over the last seven years Jemima has worked and taught within the School of Visual Arts at QUT and in Creative Arts at Griffith University on the Gold Coast. Jemima has exhibited in group shows throughout Australia, and has been included in an exhibition at Ivan Dougherty Gallery as apart of the 2004 Sydney Biennale Program. She has recently completed a studio residency at 18th Street Arts Centre in Los Angeles and was included in an exhibition at Dangerous Curve also located in Los Angeles.

Elinor Carucci was born in Israel and received her BFA from Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem. She has received considerable recognition as a photographer with solo shows at Gagosian, London, The Photographers’ Gallery, London, Fotografie Forum, Frankfurt and Ricco/Maresca Gallery, New York. Her work has been seen in numerous solo and group exhibitions in the US, London, and Israel and is included in the collections of MoMA, the Brooklyn Museum, ICP, the Jewish Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Her work has appeared in many anthologies and a monograph, Closer, was published by Chronicle Books in 2002. Steidl will release Diary of a Dancer next spring. Carucci has been awarded a John S. Guggenheim fellowship and the International Center for Photography’s Infinity Award for Young Photographer (2001). She is a highly regarded teacher at the School of Visual Arts and, for the spring of 2004, at Harvard University.
