Korean-American: Artist Dream
Ok Kee Kim
This year, Korean-Americans
commemorate the centennial anniversary of their immigrant experience. To celebrate
this occasion, the Space Gallery is proud to present the 100 Korean-American
artists’ exhibition in one of the artistic centers of the world, New York City.
Many Korean-Americans
have distinguished themselves in America with their work ethic and self-reliance.
Likewise, Korean artists, who started immigrating since the end of the Korean
War, sought artistic independence and their personal visions even in the midst
of difficult circumstances. They settled in New York City, in particular, because
it provided a unique environment of cultural diversity and the solidarity within
that diversity. However, living as artists in the Korean-American immigrant community
has not always proved to be so accommodating. They have faced numerous difficulties
and the Space World Gallery has opened in 1997 with the main purpose of providing
to these artists their creative outlet.
Since its opening,
the Space World Gallery has held many exhibitions concentrating on the works
of Korean-American artists, but none has matched the present exhibition in terms
of scope and size. This exhibition is displaying not only the works of world-renowned
and established artists, but is also introducing new artists. The Space World
Gallery hopes that this exhibition provides the unique opportunity of bringing
these diverse artistic voices within the Korean-American community together.
