Hadid London Debut Scrapped Amid Market Concerns
Plans for what was to be Pritzker Prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid’s
first permanent building in London have been scrapped after the Architecture Foundation, for whom the structure was to be a new headquarters, was unable to secure sufficient funding from donors. The planned $10 million structure was to have been completed in July 2009. The New York Times reports that the decision was made "as a result of the credit crunch that began with the subprime mortgage collapse" and the Evening Standard in London said that donors wavered because of "economic nervousness" and a stock market slump. Just a day after Art Cologne announced that it was doing away with its
new sister fair on the Spanish island of Majorca, DC Duesseldorf Contemporary, which premiered last April, announced that it too was closing its doors, reports Bloomberg. The fair’s organizers cited low sales, saying in a statement, "All indications are that art-market activity concentrates on a few art fairs with international and not just German significance."
