    A Picturesque and Pricey Virgin

The earliest known portrait of Elizabeth I is expected to fetch up to £1 million ($2 million) at a Sotheby’s auction November 22, the Daily Telegraph reports. The portrait from the early 1560s shows the "Virgin Queen" at about 30 years old and has never been seen by the public. Painted by Steven van der Meulen, it is described as the most important portrait of the queen to come to the market. (Artinfo, November 15, 2007)

    Germany Funds Jewish Museum

Germany has donated 7.3 million dollars (5 million euros) to help build a new Jewish history museum in the Polish capital Warsaw, home to Europe’s largest Jewish community before the Holocaust. "In this way, the federal government wants to make a new contribution to redressing the immeasurable suffering inflicted in the name of the Germans upon the Jews in this country, and thus upon Poland as a whole," said German Ambassador Michael Gerdts at a ceremony in Warsaw.
